Scope of the Department
Ayurvedic Gynaecology and Obstetrics, known as " Prasuti Tantra & Stri Roga " is a specialized branch of Ayurveda that focuses on the health of women from menarche to menopause, including pregnancy and postpartum care. It integrates ancient wisdom with holistic healing to address various gynaecological disorders and reproductive health concerns.
Key Areas
- Menstrual Disorders: Ayurveda provides treatments for gynaecological conditions like irregular cycles, dysmenorrhea (painful periods), amenorrhea, heavy menstrual bleeding etc using internal medicines, dietary modifications, therapies like Panchakarma and local therapies like intra uterine uttaravasthi etc.
- Infertility & Reproductive Health: The scope of Prasuti Stree roga in infertility is holistic, focusing on addressing the root causes of infertility through a combination of internal medications, detoxification, life style modifications and emotional well being. The management of infertility addressing both partners is effectively done.
- Pregnancy Care (Garbhini Paricharya): Ayurveda emphasizes a month wise regimen, including diet (Pathya-Apathya), internal medicines, yoga, and emotional well-being to ensure a healthy pregnancy and foetal development.
- Labour and Post Delivery Care: Ayurveda has a systemic approach to help ensure a smooth & healthy delivery process, pain management strategies, and postnatal care to aid recovery, lactation, and prevent postpartum complications.
- Menopause Management :Ayurveda offers a natural approach to managing menopause symptoms like hot flashes, osteoporosis, mood swings etc.
- Holistic Gynaecological Treatments: Ayurveda also addresses conditions like PCOS, endometriosis, dysmenorrhea and uterine fibroids through a combination of internal medicines, external and local therapies and lifestyle changes.
The Prasuti tantra & Stree roga Department of Govt Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram, functions in the Hospital for Women & Children , Poojappura. The Women & Child Hospital wing of Thiruvananthapuram Govt Ayurveda College is the only Hospital in Kerala in the Govt sector with combined Allopathic & Ayurvedic facilities functioning under the same roof and extending services in Gynaecology, Obstetrics & Paediatrics. The Department provides OP& IP care facilities in Preconceptional care, Antenatal care, Postnatal care and treatment for various Gynaecological disorders like PCOS, Fibroid, Infertility, Endometriosis, Adenomyosis, Heavy menstrual bleeding, Dysmenorrhea, Chronic pelvic pain, Vaginal infections, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Breast Diseases etc.
- Ayurveda and Allopathy OPD for Gynaecology and Obstetrics.
- The Department focuses on the management of all gynecological conditions and Ante Natal care, Post Natal care, Infertility, Adolescent Gynecology , Gynecologic Oncology , Peri menopausal and Menopausal issues.
- Examination Rooms for Modern & Ayurvedic medicine, Ultrasound Sonogram Unit, Postpartum Sterilisation Unit, Nebulisation corner, Emergency room, breast feeding room, Colposcopy Room and Speciality OP room.
- Labour Room for conduct of normal Vaginal deliveries
- Operation Theatre to conduct procedures like Caesarean Section, Hysterectomy, D&C, MTP, Diagnostic procedures etc.
- Laparoscopic Sterilisation
- There are 106 beds in the hospital for IP section. 80 beds for Ayurveda wing & 20 beds for allopathic wing & 6 for the post partum unit. Out of 80 beds in Ayurveda section – 60 is for Dept of Prasuti Tantra & Streeroga.

The Department of Prasuti-Streeroga has an annual intake of 8 Post graduate scholars and 3 Post graduate diploma students. Yearly gives training to 86 ug students of BAMS in the subject of Prasuti Tantra. Theory classes, clinical classes, Out patient & In patient clinical training, labour room posting and operation theatre posting are provided to ug students. Expertise training is provided to post graduate students &post graduate diploma students in the areas of gynaecologic & Obstetric examinations, major &minor surgeries, sthanika cikilsa etc. Labour room posting is provided for postgraduates and post graduate diploma students , where they gain practical experience in the delivery room, performing vaginal deliveries, hands-on experience in managing labor and delivery complications, monitor fetal well being,etc.We have a well furnished library, museum & a seminar hall with LCD projector for conducting presentations. It is also a Department for PhD studies. Currently 16 post graduate dissertation works & 6 post graduate diploma research works are being carried out in the department.
PROJECT FUNCTIONING IN THE DEPARTMENT
1. State project on gynaecology/ Apex centre for Ayurveda Gynaecology
The State Project on Ayurveda Gynaecology under the Department of Prasuti- Stree roga envisages a referral centre which will function as the apex centre for providing tertiary ayurvedic care to Gynaecology and Obstetric patients all over the state. The construction activities are underway in the Women & Children hospital , Pujappura and is expected to be completed in the next few years.
2. Supraja project
Supraja project is an Ayush maternal and neonatal intervention programme under National Ayush Mission functioning in the department of Prasuti & Stree roga,Women & Child Hospital,Govt Ayurveda college,Thiruvananthapuram, since 2023.It aims at giving Ayurveda Antenatal care and Yoga for pregnant women to reduce the rate of caesarean sections and delivery complications. It also includes Post natal care and Post natal yoga which helps them to return to the pre- pregnant state more effectively.
