Neurology Special OP

Introduction & Background

Neurological disorders include those affecting the Brain, Spinal cord, Nerves, Neuromuscular junction, and Autonomic nervous system. Collectively, they come under the broad spectrum of ‘VATA disorders' mentioned in Ayurvedic classics. The incidence of these disorders is alarmingly increasing in parallel with the increase in the ageing of the world population and is expected to remain so.
Department of Kayachikitsa, is one of the prime Post graduate departments in India started in 1973 at Govt. Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram. With ample academic and clinical experience of more than 45 years, this department is unique and versatile in handling neurological cases. Also being an academic institution, it carries huge expectations from Ayurvedic fraternity as well as other medical systems in the field of clinical and research activities. Rather than focusing on emergency-level management, the department ensures proper neurorehabilitation and follow-up care for those affected. Continuing guideship from faculties of Dept. of Neurology, Govt. Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, also helps us understand current patient care trends.
Though proper OP and IP care is being provided, the constant increase in volume of new patients forced this department to start a special OP in 2018 for ensuring special care to neurologically affected patients.

Aims and Objectives

This OP helps to provide additional care to neurologically affected persons and create awareness of current ayurvedic trends among the public. Also, it ensures proper documentation of the cases and their outcomes and possible publications. To maintain and develop an evidence-based approach to clinical practice, and to enhance the clinical and academic skills of students are also looked into.
The department is well equipped with time-tested validated treatment protocols, experienced faculties, 24 P.G. scholars, and supporting staff. Adequate medicines funded by the Department of Ayurveda Medical Education under AYUSH, types of equipment like a Neuropathy analyzer for detecting early nerve damage, and physiotherapy equipment and tools available.

A Bone mineral density test measures how much calcium in an area of bone. This test helps to detect osteoporosis and predict risk for bone fracture.

Neuro sensory analyser

Neuro sensory analyser is a modern medical diagnostic device for early diagnosis of nerve fibre damage using vibration sensitivity methods. It is a precise computer controlled device capable of generating and documenting response to highly repeatable thermal and vibratory stimuli such as warmth, cold, heat induced pain, cold induced pain or vibrations. It is used for the diagnosis of peripheral neuropathies (Diabetic), peripheral poly neuropathies etc.

Spyrometer

A Spyrometer is an apparatus for measuring the volume of air inspired and expired by the lungs.Spirometer measures ventilation, the movement of air into and out of lungs. The spyrogram will identify 2 different types of abnormal ventilation patterns – obstructive and restrictive. This test is done to diagnose certain types of lung disorders, check lung functions, and assess the effect of medication and measures progress in disease treatment.
