The Department of kaumarabhritya is functioning at Govt Ayurveda college hospital for women and  children, Poojappura, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. (https://maps.app.goo.gl/18DGMx27KY7kyqQo7) This is the only Government Institution in Kerala where both Allopathic and Ayurvedic systems are working hand in hand.

Scope of the Department

The department deals with academic, clinical and research activities related to the field of Pediatrics. The post graduate department ensures scientific ayurvedic treatments for all kinds of pediatric clinical conditions. The plan fund allotted for the Children with neurodevelopmental disorders is utilized for procuring medicines, equipments and providing services related. The beneficiaries of the fund include children attending the OPD and IPD of the department. We cater all patients coming from every part of the globe. There is no restriction regarding the admission protocol and treatment protocol. We ensure the better quality of services to all irrespective of their socio -economic status, because these are the population requiring long term medication and supportive care. Deals with the physical, psychological, behavioral and learning issues of children. Disorders like Cerebral Palsy, Autism, ADHD, learning disablilties etc are effectively being managed here.

Well-established Outpatient room with adequate clinical facilities serving more than 7000 patients per year. Three units are designated viz; kb1, kb2, kb3, each constituting Faculties along with Postgraduate scholars and house surgeons for the smooth management of O.P and I.P

Well Baby Clinic

Functioning on every Wednesdays. Developmental assessments are conducted for every child receiving immunization, enabling the early detection of disorders and providing timely interventions to address identified issues.

Academic Activities and Researches

Academic and clinical training is given for 88 UG students every year.A batch of 6 post graduates and 2 post graduate diploma are being admitted every year and given training for a period of 3 years and 2 years respectively. Researches are being carried out as a part of their course. The department also carries out researches in pediatrics funded by different state and central government agencies.

Complimentary Therapy Unit (CTU)

It was formally established on 5th February 2025 under the Department of Kaumarabrithya at the Government Ayurveda College Hospital for Women and Child, Poojappura. This initiative is supported by the National Ayush Mission (NAM) and is dedicated to providing an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to the management of developmental and behavioral disorders. The CTU seamlessly combines Ayurvedic principles with rehabilitative therapies to optimize patient outcomes.

Objective

Developmental disorders constitute a significant category of conditions contributing to childhood disability. The presence of disability in children is a matter of profound concern for both families and society at large. Despite advancements in technology and research, modern medicine continues to face challenges in delivering consistently effective outcomes. There has also been a marked increase in the prevalence of developmental disorders, notwithstanding the availability of specialized antenatal, natal, and post-natal care. The CTU endeavors to manage developmental and behavioral disorders in children through specialized Ayurvedic treatment modalities within the inpatient department, complemented by therapies such as physiotherapy, speech therapy, psychotherapy, and behavior therapy.

• The Department of Kaumarabhritya has made significant academic contributions through publications in reputed national and international peer-reviewed journals. Faculty members have actively engaged in research focusing on integrative and evidence-based Ayurvedic pediatric care.

Children's Day Celebration at Women and Children Hospital Poojappura

Programme Report: Children's Day Celebration at Women and Children Hospital Poojappura

On November 14, 2024, the Women and Children Hospital Poojappura celebrated Children's Day. The event was organized by the Department of Balachikitsa, Government Ayurveda Colllege Trivandrum aimed to bring joy to the child patients admitted to the hospital, as well as those attending outpatient services. The celebration began with a series of cultural performances by the young patients, including dance and songs. A highlight of the day was the cake-cutting ceremony, which was attended by both inpatient (IP) and outpatient (OP) children. In addition, each child was presented with thoughtful gifts as a token of appreciation.
