About the Department
Dravyagunavigyana is one among the vibrant departments of Government Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram. It deals with the teaching and research on principles, properties and therapeutic utility of food items and raw drugs mentioned in Ayurveda. The department gives emphasis in providing updates on Ayurvedic clinical pharmacology .
Scope of the Department
Department of Dravyagunavigyana primarily focuses at academic and research innovations in the field of Ayurvedic Clinical pharmacology. Department conducts research on Pharmacognostical, phytochemical and pharmacological studies on classical as well as ethno-botanical drugs, primarily medicinal plants. The findings will hopefully contribute to enrich the Ayurveda pharmacopoea.
Mission
- To develop expertise in the clinical pharmacology of Ayurvedic drugs by integrating knowledge from pharmacognosy, pharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, and therapeutics.
- To promote quality education, research, and outreach in Ayurveda drug studies from UG to PhD level.
- To uphold evidence-based, ethically grounded Ayurvedic practices in academic and clinical settings.

Department History
The Department of Dravyaguna is one of the foundational departments of Govt. Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram, dedicated to the study of Ayurvedic Materia Medica (Dravyagunavigyanam). The department covers both traditional domains such as:
- Namarupa Vijnan (Botanical identification)
- Gunakarma Vijnan (Properties and actions)
- Kalpana Vijnan (Pharmaceutical processing)
- Prayoga Vijnan (Therapeutic application)
Affiliated to Kerala University of Health Sciences and regulated by NCISM, the department has grown to become a key hub for teaching, research, and clinical application in Ayurveda drug sciences.

- Herbal Garden – Maintaining more than 150 live medicinal plants
- Department Library – Collection of 800+ subject related books for aiding PG studies

- Pharmacognosy Lab – For carrying out UG and PG practical classes and research works
- Animal House –For doing animal experiments for PG and Ph.D. works. Registered with CCSEA

Apart from the conducting classes for BAMS students, department hosts the following higher courses- PG (MD – Dravyagunavigyana ) – 8 seats per year
- PGD (D. Pharmacognosy (Ay.)) – 3 seats per year
- Ph.D. (Ph.D. Ayurveda Medicine)
Role in UG and PG Training
Undergraduate (BAMS) Teaching :
- Introduces fundamental knowledge on identification, properties, and application of drugs.
- Supports hands-on learning through herbal garden tours, drug museum demos, and formulation practices.
Postgraduate (MD Dravyaguna / PG Diploma) :

Research works for 8 post graduate dissertations are being carried out every year. Department has completed four departmental research works.
- Taxonomical, Pharmacognostical, Phytochemical, Anti-Bacterial And Ayurvedic Standardisation of selected Vranahara (Wound Healing) plants from Hortus Malabaricus.
- Lithotriptic effect of Brihatyadigana in albino rats
- Clinical evaluation of the effects of Processed Thriphala Churna in treatment of Non- Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)”
